Giant Food is taking over a shuttered Kmart store in the Springfield Plaza shopping center.
An interior alteration permit was filed last month by Landover-based Giant for 6364 Springfield Plaza, a former Kmart that closed in late 2018. The roughly 76,000-square-foot building, constructed in 1980, is owned by an affiliate of Bethesda-based Finmarc Management Inc.
Finmarc representatives did not respond to requests for comment. A Giant Food spokesman declined comment “at this time.”
The project is out to bid for general contractors, with a valuation of about $3 million and a target start date of early- to mid-2020, according to a construction leads website. Construction is expected to take roughly six months.
Giant will take the vast majority of the former Kmart space, but not the entire thing, leaving about 10,000 square feet for a couple of smaller tenant spaces.
Giant Food operates a 48,000-square-foot store in Springfield Plaza, in a portion of the shopping center managed by Rappaport. The Kmart offers the opportunity to take over a much larger space with dedicated parking out front. Rappaport did not respond to requests for comment.
Springfield Plaza is controlled by at least three owners. In addition to Giant, its tenants include Trader Joe’s, Buy Buy Baby, a Verizon store, Bob and Edith’s Diner, Chipotle, Starbucks, Hard Times Cafe and a Potbelly Sandwich Shop. A portion of the Kmart recently hosted a Spirit Halloween outpost.
The new Giant, according to plans, will include a Starbucks with seating area, a bank space, pharmacy with immunization area, a cheese shop, and 10 registers and eight self-check machines. The architect is listed as Two Points of View Architectural Studio of Lorton.
